How to Read Your Child's 11+ Mock Results

The short answer
A raw mock percentage tells you far less than parents assume, and treating it as a verdict causes a great deal of unnecessary worry. The number depends on how hard that particular paper was, and commercial mock papers vary enormously in difficulty — many are pitched deliberately harder than the real thing, both to leave headroom and because a sobering score sells the next product. A real 11+ test solves this by standardising: raw marks are converted against the cohort and adjusted for age, so the reported figure means something consistent. Why the percentage on its own misleads
Consider two children who both score 62%. One sat a gentle familiarisation paper where the cohort average was 75%; the other sat a hard commercial mock where the average was 48%. The same number describes a below-average performance in one case and a strong one in the other. Without knowing the paper's difficulty and how other children did on it, the figure is uninterpretable — and most mock providers publish neither. This is precisely the problem standardisation exists to solve in the real test. The practical consequence is that comparing your child's mock percentage to a published real-test threshold is not a like-for-like comparison and will usually mislead, in one direction or the other. If a provider does report a standardised score with an age adjustment, that figure is worth far more than the percentage beside it, and worth asking for if it is not offered.
What should we actually look at instead?
Three things, in order. First, the trend: how has your child's accuracy moved across six to eight weeks on comparable papers? A rising line on similar material is the single most reassuring signal available, and a flat line on rising difficulty is also progress. Second, the error breakdown: sort every wrong answer into a method gap, where they did not know how; a careless slip, where they did know and rushed; or a timing loss, where they never reached the question. Those three need completely different responses — teaching, accuracy discipline, and pacing practice respectively — and the mix tells you what next week should contain. Third, completion: did they finish? An unfinished paper is a pacing problem masquerading as a knowledge problem, and it inflates the apparent size of the gap. My child scored badly on their first mock. Should I worry?
Almost certainly not, and the reason is structural rather than reassuring. A first mock is usually the first time a child has met that paper's format, timing and question mix all at once, and the score reflects unfamiliarity as much as ability. Verbal and non-verbal reasoning are the clearest example: they are not taught in school, so a bright child who has never practised them can score far below their real level and then climb steeply once the formats click. How does age affect a mock score?
More than most mock reports acknowledge. The real test standardises for age in months, so a summer-born child is compared against other summer-born children rather than against classmates nearly a year older. Most commercial mocks do not do this, which means a raw percentage systematically understates a younger child's standing — the very adjustment the real test will apply is simply missing. For a family with an August-born child, that gap is worth holding in mind before drawing conclusions from any mock number. Turning a mock into next week's plan
The debrief is where the value is, and it should happen within a day while your child can still recall their reasoning. Mark together, go through wrong answers, and classify each one — that classification is the entire product of the exercise. Then pick the two or three categories generating the most losses and let them set the next fortnight's practice. Write it down, because the pattern across several mocks is far more informative than any single paper. By the third or fourth mock the log becomes a personalised preparation plan, and by the sixth it should look nearly exhausted, which is the real signal that a child is ready. Resist the temptation to sit another mock immediately to see if the score moved; the score moves when the underlying gaps close, and closing them takes targeted practice rather than more testing.
