Heckmondwike Grammar School: 11+ entrance test and admissions

Heckmondwike Grammar School is a mixed grammar school in Kirklees, West Yorkshire, with up to 210 places in Year 7 and typically more than 1,200 children registering for its entrance exam. The test is supplied by FSCE and covers English, maths and creative writing at Key Stage 2 level, up to the end of the Year 5 curriculum. Registration runs in May and June of Year 5, the exam is early in the autumn term of Year 6, and more children pass than there are places — so the school's oversubscription criteria, including a catchment priority, decide who is offered one.

Facts checked against the school's and council's own published pages on 8 October 2026. Admissions details change every year — always confirm with the school before applying.

How admission works

Every child must pass the entrance exam to be considered, whether or not they live in the catchment area — the standard is the same for everyone. Because there are always more children who reach it than there are places, the school then applies its five oversubscription criteria in order. Living in the catchment area does not lower the bar, but it does give priority when the school is oversubscribed; residence is judged by the child's permanent address on the day of the exam.

The school says that in a typical year over three-quarters of places go to children living outside the catchment area, and roughly half of all places are allocated to children meeting one of the oversubscription criteria. The remaining places are offered in rank order of the final weighted test score. That makes Heckmondwike unusual among grammar schools with a catchment priority: a strong score from outside the area is a realistic route in, not a long shot.

Two details are easy to miss. A child who has passed a nationally recognised music exam at grade 2 or above by the date of the entrance exam is given priority within the criteria — but only if it is declared on the registration form. And an Education, Health and Care Plan naming the school is considered early in allocation but does not by itself satisfy any of the criteria.

The entrance test

The test is provided by FSCE (Future Stories Community Enterprise). It assesses how children apply English and maths knowledge and skills, and explores imaginative flair through a creative writing element. There are multiple-choice and written-response questions, and the school states that children are assessed only on knowledge appropriate to the Key Stage 2 curriculum — nothing beyond the Year 5 programme of study.

Each paper's result is standardised, age-weighted and combined into a total standardised age score, so the youngest children in the year are not disadvantaged. The school publishes a selection of familiarisation questions late in the summer term before each test, and takes the position that the FSCE exam does not require specialist tutoring. Key dates

For September 2027 entry, registration opened at 9:00am on Monday 11 May 2026 and closed at midday on Monday 22 June 2026, for children born between 1 September 2015 and 31 August 2016. Requests for access arrangements had to reach the admissions officer by noon on 26 June 2026. Results are shared in mid-October so that families can name the school on their council's Common Application Form, due by 31 October.

Dates for September 2028 entry had not been published when this guide was checked. If the pattern holds, registration will again open in May 2027 — confirm on the school's admissions calendar before relying on it, because late registrations are not accepted.

How to prepare

Because the test is built on the Year 5 curriculum, the most useful preparation is strong, fluent schoolwork rather than a separate reasoning syllabus. In maths: instant recall of times tables, written methods for all four operations, fractions and decimals, and multi-step problems. In English: reading comprehension with inference and vocabulary, accurate grammar and punctuation, and a habit of writing a short, well-structured piece to time.

Use the school's own familiarisation questions as soon as they are published, and practise creative writing regularly through Year 5 — it is the element children are least used to doing under exam conditions. If your child is also sitting a GL or CEM-style test elsewhere, keep that reasoning practice as a separate track. Our creative writing guide covers building that skill week by week.

Heckmondwike Grammar: frequently asked questions

What is the Heckmondwike Grammar School pass mark?

The school does not publish a fixed pass mark. Every candidate's papers are standardised, age-weighted and combined into one total score, and more children reach the required standard than there are places, so the oversubscription criteria and then rank order decide who is offered one.

Do you have to live in the catchment area to get into Heckmondwike Grammar?

No. The school says that in a typical year over three-quarters of its places go to children living outside the catchment area. Catchment residents must pass to the same standard, and are given priority only when the school is oversubscribed.

What is in the Heckmondwike entrance exam?

An FSCE test of English and maths with a creative writing element, using multiple-choice and written-response questions. It covers only Key Stage 2 content up to the end of Year 5, and the school publishes familiarisation questions late in the summer term before each test.

When do you register for the Heckmondwike entrance exam?

In May and June of Year 5. For 2027 entry, registration ran from 9:00am on 11 May to midday on 22 June 2026, and the school does not accept late or incomplete registrations.

Does a music grade help at Heckmondwike Grammar?

Yes, within the oversubscription criteria: priority is given to a child who has passed a nationally recognised music exam at grade 2 or above by the date of the entrance exam, provided it is indicated on the registration form.
